ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens or Intraocular Contact Lens)
This
procedure which was brought to the world by STAAR Surgical allows the
implantation of foldable lens in front of the natural lens and just
behind the iris. It has 2 main types; the regular ICL for correction of
far-sightedness and near-sightedness, and the Torric-ICL for correction
of near- and far-sightedness mixed with astigmatism.
Material:
The Visian ICL™ is made with Swiss precision from Collamer. Collamer, a
collagen copolymer is a proprietary biocompatible material formed from
pure collagen and a hydrophilic copolymer with a UV absorbent
chromophore. This material has been used to treat the eye for over 15
years now and considered very safe.
Main Uses:
-
For younger patients with a clear natural lens and refractive errors
outside the safe range for laser techniques. That is to say more than
-9.00 or +7.00 diopters. - For laser candidates who suffer from thin cornea. - In cases of Keratoconus, after performing Crosslinking procedure, ICL can be used to correct vision. The ICL and Torric ICL is getting popular nowadays.
The Possible Problems: -
If the angle of anterior chamber (between the cornea and the iris) is
narrow, then there's a potential risk of secondary glaucoma. In case
glaucoma developed, ICL should be removed. - In the future, if
cataract developed then we have to remove the ICL and do Phaco surgery.
Here the lOL implanted will take the place for vision correction.
